The Writers:


Jennifer Dick – Paris, FRA. Jen completed her MFA at Colorado State University and has had poems published in such magazines as Phoebe, The Portland Review, Whiskey Island Magazine, PermaFrost, and Gertrude. She is the WICE’s poet in residence in Paris where she teaches writing and English.

Joe Eichman – Denver, CO. Joe’s poetry has appeared in Gertrude and Lighthouse Inkwell. His one-act play was performed at Chicago’s Live Bait Theatre.

Robert Klein Engler
– Chicago, IL. Robert lives in Chicago and New Orleans. He currently teaches at Roosevelt University. His poems and stories have appeared in many publications including Hyphen, Christopher Street, The James White Review and Kansas Quarterly. He was the recipient of the Illinois Arts Council Literary Award for his poem, Flower Festival at Genzano.

James Farmer – Fort Collins, CO. Jim is a writer and staff member of Gertrude. He publishes “gaywrites.com” a website featuring personal essays and those from guest writers. He is active in the Colorado GLBT community and has served on numerous boards and projects.

Robert Haynes – Scottsdale, AZ. Robert is the author of The Grand Unified Theory, a book-length poem published in 2001 (Kansas City, Paladin Contemporaries). His poems have appeared in New Letters, Poetry Northwest, Kentucky Poetry Review, and Cimarron Review.

Laura Johnson – Tempe, AZ.

J.R. Kangas – Flint, MI. J.R. Kangas works as a librarian and musician. His work has appeared in a wide range of publications including The James White Review, New Letters, Poet & Critic, The South Carolina Review, and The New York Quarterly.

Katrina Leon – Southern Pines, NC. Originally from Vermont, Katrina lives in North Carolina with her family. She has been writing seriously for two years. This is her first fiction publication.

Patricia Nazirah Mickey – Minneapolis, MN. Nazirah’s work has been seen on stages in Chicago, Minneapolis, Washington DC, and New York. She has performed at Nuyorican Poets Cafe in NYC, The Kennedy Center in DC, the Ordway, Penumbra, and The Fitzgerald in St. Paul. Last year, she was nominated for Spoken Word Artist of the Year by the Minnesota Music Academy. She will represent Minneasota in Seattle for the National Poetry Slam. She has toured with such groups as The Real Read in Chicago and is currently a part of the National touring collective Red Lights & Poetry in Minnesota.

Dianne Millen – Edinburgh, UK. Dianne is a researcher and writer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She has published academic papers on gender and employment, feminist knowledge and Scottish social policy. Working in housing research, she combines academic writing with journalism and short fiction, having published a number of pieces in British magazines. Current projects include an embryonic management textbook and a fictional anthology on working lives. This is her first poetry publication.

Janell Moon – Emeryville, CA. Janell is the author of four books of poetry including The Mouth of Home published by Arctos Press. She teaches writing at the community college in Marin and San Francisco and has a private practice as a hypnotherapist and counselor in San Francisco.

Jennifer Perrine – Sunbury, PA. Jennifer is a multiracial, queer poet and visual artist. She currently works with the Race/Gender Resource Center at Bucknell University. Her poems have appeared in a number of journals, including Fireweed, Hurricane Alice, and Shades of December. Recently, she was awarded a Walker Foundation Grant to the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.

Christopher Stephen Soden – Dallas, TX. Christopher directs a workshop and performance cooperative named The Dallas Poets Community. His work has appeared in The James White Review, The Great Lawn, The Dallas Review, The Chiron Review, Borderlands, Venue, Espejo, The Richland Chronicle, and many others. In addition, it has appeared in Gents, Blood Offerings, and The Best of Texas Writing 2.

Richard Tayson – Jamaica, NY. Richard is an award-winning poet whose complete biography precedes Gertrude’s interview on page 6.

Noah Tysick – Freeland, MI. Noah holds an MA in English Language and Literature and will begin teaching creative writing at Saginaw Valley State University in the Fall 2001. His first book of poetry, Miss American Pie and Other Lies, was released by Writers Club Press in April.


The Artists:


Jacquelyn Harp – Boulder, CO. Jacquelyn is a contemporary storyteller – an observer of human behavior and culture. She weaves tales from images generated by society. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibits. Jacquelyn is represented by Pismo Gallery in Beaver Creek, Colorado and Raw Style Gallery in Santa Monica, California.

Nicole Heidbreder – Boulder, CO. Nicole received her BFA at William Woods University. She then attended the Colorado Institute of Art in Fashion Design and attended the Art Student’s League of Denver for Painting.

Deanna Nagel – Fort Collins, CO. Originally from Illinois, Deanna’s recent fascination in art is photography. She is currently working with large grain film to create ethereal images.

Blair Phillips Friederich – Tucson, AZ. Blair’s artwork is currently on display in several juried shows and he will be opening a one-man show at the Metroform Gallery in Tucson, Arizona.

Julia Rymer – Denver, CO. Julia received her BFA from the University of Denver. She also attended the Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing at the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France. Julia is currently a gallery administrator for the William Havu Gallery in Denver.
