And the women’s magazines all say
to drink five pints a day
To top us up.
So I do, and you do,
and then I reach inside to the wrist
and cuff myself to water.
Like a secret spring
(unbottled, uncarbonated, unsold)
each night finds its own level.

(Well, women are.)
Men are less moist, and this has consequences,
for both our senses.
They’re not told to drink five pints a day
To top them up.
so they don’t, and I don’t
feel the need to reach inside them
to find the airy, sterile hollow,
A part-evacuated tube where sparks can jump
from mind to mine – but not from womb to womb.

Covers the surface of my dreamscapes.
Where men are moist and women airy,
and I neither parch nor drown.
Unhooked from water
but not enslaved to fire.
