On my most recent trip to SF, I was lucky enough to be able to attend both the Literary Death Match and the latest Writers with Drinks. At Literary Death Match. Maybe I am showing my age, but my feet began to hurt as the finalists struggled to put together a jigsaw puzzle that would ultimately be the face of Hunter S. Thompson - or so I read later, since I had already caved to my barking dogs and vamoosed. To my delight, as I also read later, Monica Youn was crowned victorious!
Monica is an amazing poet (finalist for the National Book Award 2010) who also performed at Writers with Drinks the following night! On that, in my last post I promised more pics. Here is one of the amazing ceiling decor of the Make Out Room (host of WWD)...
I love that damn ceiling.
Anyway, Monica... she is amazing! She read from her recent poetry collection, which was inspired by Ignatz Mouse, the rodent anti-hero of George Herriman's comic strip Krazy Kat. All I can say is Dang. Read an excerpt here (scroll down).
I stayed to the sweet end of WWD - a few hot toddys egging me on - to laugh my ass as Rick Moody's read an excerpt from Four Fingers of Death on the trials and tribulations of intergalactic, zero gravity lovin' between two rammy astronauts.
The night ended with well wishes to a new friend and great writer, Mr. Seth Fischer, who was on his way to LA for a month or so, before my girlfriend and I walking back to her apartment, with Ignatz tucked inside my coat...
