Dear readers-
Do I even need to say it: HOLY SHIT, our featured poet for this issue is Nikky Finney, wrangled by our beloved poetry editor, Stephanie Glazier, just before she takes a hiatus to work on her own amazing (I read it and it is amazing) collection. Stepping in for her is the fabulous Nadine Marshall, who will be our guest poetry editor for the next 2 issues - Jan. 2021 and May 2021. Learn more about them and what they are looking for in our Nadine Q&A.
We also are introducing a new section called Have You Read? Guess what it's about? You got it! A brief spotlight shined on work we'd love you to consider digging into once you've finished dear Gertrude. This may help lessen the blow from our recent decision to end our quarterly, queer book club, GERTIE. We love GERTIE. In this current world order, however, it is simply too difficult to get books signed, shipped, boxed, etc. with our editors stationed all around the world and unable to move. But STAY TUNED - we will have exciting news in the coming months that just may help you dry those tears...
Titillated? Oh, we do so hope. To be kept in the loopy on our surprise news, you can sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of our ABOUT page or follow along on our GERTIE Book Club Facebook page.
In addition to stellar poetry and a new section, we are also delighted to be able to publish Turkish writer Nazli Karabiyikoglu, who has five published books in Turkish that won won six awards. Her piece was translated by Eylul Doganay (pardon the missing accents!) and will stay with you for a very, very long time. It is definitely one of the most powerful pieces we've ever published, and is wonderful alongside Darius Stewart's "Patient Zero" - among many other glorious pieces. So take your time and enjoy...
Lastly, don't miss our Artist Q&A with Gertrude cover artist, Kevin Sampsell. Learn out about his experiences in publishing and, of course, collage. Doing this Q&A with Kevin made me miss Portland even more! Someday, when borders are opened, I shall see you, my beloved Portland, once again. For now, I will have something with a fried egg on top of it in your honor...
Meanwhile, from Switzerland with smooches-
tammy
